Intermedial Photography : a Study

How can a static image be animated with the projection of motion? How is the perception of a photography influenced, when adding an additional medium? How far can we go with the manipulation of the image, and where are the limits?

During this self-initiated project, together with Lisa Peter and Corinna Duschl, we each experimented with the effects of mixing the static image and the dynamic video-projection.

The result was an installation demonstrating the three performances.

For this study, I took an image of an alley and wondered if the impression of depth could be enhanced again with a projection on the still image. To achieve such an impression, many masks and layers had to be created to differentiate the different image depth and play with it. In the first part of the projection, realistic manipulations were attempted to revive the still image. In the later part, more artistic and abstract animations were ventured.

This study showed the potential and limits of this technique:

  • More radical manipulations are only possible in darkness, as the light absorption and reflection must be considered. The projection cannot add infinite lightness to a dark part of the image, there are limits.
  • Objects added through a projection will give a ghostly effect as the original base image will shine through. The only possibility to avoid this effect is to add a black object in the animation while projecting in complete darkness.
  • Video recordings cannot reproduce the live effect. The picture seems surreal with the projection and people have a hard time defining what is part of the picture and what belongs to the animation. This creates a moment of wonder and leads to questioning the own perception.
